Vitamin D - everything you need to know

Vitamin D is often referred to as the vitamin of the sun, and is important for maintaining a normal immune system and for strengthening the skeleton and bones. The vitamin also helps to maintain a normal level of calcium and phosphorus in the body. These are minerals that are essential for bones and teeth. The daily intake of vitamin D is important, especially here in Norway where we are exposed to little sunlight for much of the year.

What does vitamin D do in the body?

Studies show that many people have insufficient levels of vitamin D. This is probably because there are few natural food sources of the vitamin, so we are completely dependent on sunlight to maintain normal levels. Low levels can affect bone tissue, muscles and the immune system. The vitamin contributes to, among other things:

  • Normal function of the immune system
  • Normal absorption and utilization of calcium and phosphorus
  • Normal blood calcium levels
  • Maintenance of normal bones
  • Maintenance of normal muscle function
  • Maintenance of normal teeth
  • Cell division processes

Deficiency can make you feel sluggish, tired and exhausted. You may have noticed that you have more energy, are more alert and happier in the summer? In summer, the sun is a very important source, and it doesn't take much sunlight to replenish your stores. Just 15-20 minutes a day of sun on your face and arms is sufficient. In winter, when the sun is low, we don't get enough vitamin D from sunlight here in Norway. An extra supplement may then often be necessary.

Sources of vitamin D

There are few foods that contain this important vitamin. The main sources are oily fish, roe and fish liver. Other sources include margarine and extra light milk with added vitamin D. If you are a vegetarian, you can get a small amount through foods with added vitamin D, such as oat milk and soy milk. The Norwegian Directorate of Health says that this is most likely not enough and that a dietary supplement can be taken to help maintain normal levels.
