Dopamine

Dopamine is a neurotransmitter, a chemical messenger in the brain that plays a central role in the regulation of several important functions, including motivation, reward, mood and movement. It belongs to the category of catecholamines and is mainly produced in areas such as the substantia nigra and ventral tegmental areas of the brain.

Dopamine works by sending signals between nerve cells, and is involved in complex neural circuits. A balanced dopamine function is essential for mental health, and imbalance can be linked to various conditions. Dopamine levels can be affected by lifestyle factors, nutrition and medication. Many drugs that affect the dopamine system, including antipsychotic medications and dopamine-enhancing drugs, are used in medical practice to treat various conditions.
