Essential fatty acids

Essential fatty acids (EFAs) are fatty acids that our body cannot produce itself and must therefore be obtained from the diet. The two main types of essential fatty acids are omega-3 and omega-6. These fatty acids play critical roles in the body, including cell structure, hormone production, and they support heart and brain function.

Omega-3 fatty acids, found in oily fish, flaxseed and walnuts, are known to have anti-inflammatory properties and are beneficial for heart health. Omega-6 fatty acids, found in sunflower oil and corn oil, are important for skin and brain function.

Maintaining a balance between omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids is key, as imbalances can negatively impact health. Essential fatty acids are an integral part of a balanced diet and can also be taken as supplements for those who find it difficult to get sufficient amounts through food.
